Robert Reyna
Sr.
Dec 13, 1952 — Jan 23, 2023
Beloved husband, father, friend, mentor, and leader Robert Reyna Sr passed peacefully on Monday, January 23 rd , 2023, in San Antonio, TX. A native Texan, Robert was born in December 1952 to Ernesto and Esperanza (Hope) Reyna. Raised in and around Dallas, Mr. Reyna was always proud to tell people that he was a product of public housing at Elmer Scott Place in West Dallas, later dedicating his professional life to serving low-income residents in public housing.
In 1971, Robert graduated from L.G. Pinkston High School and was inducted into the LGP Hall of Fame in 2010. Upon graduating high school, he enrolled at St. Mary's University in San Antonio to study pre-law. It was there that he met his wife, Rosemary. During their 50 years of marriage, they had four children and were blessed with twelve grandchildren.
Not forgetting his roots in public housing, Robert began his career in 1975 as a maintenance man with the San Antonio Housing Authority. He worked his way up through the ranks over the next 45 years, working various positions with the housing authorities in Fort Worth, San Diego, Houston, and finally, Beaumont. His housing experience and career spanned many areas of the industry.
In 2003, he was selected by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to assume the role of Executive Director of the Beaumont Housing Authority (BHA) in Texas. At the time, the agency was under HUD receivership. Under Robert's leadership, the agency was returned to local control within 18
months. Public trust in the agency was restored as he worked to build partnerships in the community.
In 2009, he was recognized as the Executive Director of the Year by the Texas Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials for his outstanding achievements and leadership.
Robert left a lasting legacy at BHA, with the agency renaming its Central Office in Beaumont, TX, to the Robert L. Reyna Administration Building following his retirement in 2018.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemary (Becerra), their four children, Jacqueline, Jennifer, Robert Jr, and Christopher, their twelve grandchildren, Makayla, Julien, Tigerlily, Tiegan, Ziva, Tomás, Emilio, Evelyn, Robert III, Luna, Elio, and Mariano, and his three siblings Ernest, Janie, and Emily. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Richard, and his younger brother Jacob.
A memorial service will be held on February 24, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church located at 7990 W. Military Drive in San Antonio, Texas. Reception to follow in the church hall, onsite, from 2:30-5:30 pm.
