Obituary

Letitia Catherine Fulcher was born April 8, 1952 to Opal Irene and John Monroe Fulcher, the fourth of six children.  Her daddy said the name, Letitia, was chosen because it means "happiness" in Hawaiian.

All the children received a Catholic education through all twelve grades.  Letitia attended St. Gregory's the Great ('66) and Ursuline Academy ('70.)  She also completed a Bachelor of Science degree at UTSA ('78) and received her RN associate degree at San Antonio College ('95.)

She spent the majority of her career in basic research at UTHSCSA; 21 years with breast cancer treatment in medical oncology supervised by Dr. Gary Chamness and 10 years in Pathology Microbiology supervised by Dr. James Jorgensen.  She felt very inspired in her research publications working for these renown researchers in San Antonio.

After 33 years she retired and immediately found a new job that was just as rewarding and spent the next seven years as a caregiver with Sisters Care working in The Village at incarnate Word.

From school years and work she developed and fostered life-long friendships.  In 1976 she met Joe Pappassi through friends.  They spent many vacations camping in state and national parks in addition to enjoying trips to the beach in Port Aransas … her life's bucket list was emptied.
They had a home built in 1998 on property inherited through her great-great-grandfather on her mother's side.  There was always a Texas flag displayed from their flagpole and she was proud to be an American.
Letitia loved the outdoors.  When she wasn't inside reading, on the phone, visiting friends, or baking or cooking recipes handed down from her mother she was outdoors feeding hummingbirds, cardinals, deer and watering a huge natural outdoor nursery of plants or weeding out unwanted sticker burr and weeds.
After 24 years enjoying God's great country beauty in the Adkins area and sadly watching the decline in county living as new outsider population (and the noise it brings) continued to move closer, Letitia and Joe moved and were living in the Village at Incarnate Word with their dog, Zoey, when Letitia died July 25,2023 in the off-site hospice care home called, Abode.

Cancerous glioblastoma (GBM) was diagnosis in January 2023 that dramatically changed her life. Due to a lack of any advancement in treatment for GBM the likelihood of living beyond 12-18 months (after brain surgery, plus radiation and chemotherapy) wasn't certain so Letitia declined treatment and entered Palliative Care.

All her family and friends created a warm and loving spiritual atmosphere during Letitia's final months with their prayers, cards, visits and phone conversations

("Too many to name but you know who you are my dear friends!")

Her fate had been written long ago and she accepted it bravely, trusting that "it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life."

She is survived by her kind and loving husband of 47 years, Joe Pappassi and Zoey, their rescue dog & home companion, brothers John, Timothy and William (Bill, ever so loving to the end) brother-in-law David Kirchner, sister-in-law Leisa Castillo (Joe) and Debbie Solowise, nieces and nephews Elizabeth Martinez (Javier), John Kirchner, Elysia Fulcher, Austin Fulcher, great nieces Gabriella Martinez and Khloe Fulcher, Aunt Ruth Jupe, and many loving cousins.

She willed her body at death to the UT Health Body Donation Program at San Antonio to be used for the advancement of medical Science.

Preceded in death are her parents, sister Cecilia Fulcher Kirchner and brother Michael George Fulcher.

A sincere "thank you" to her UIW nurse Greta Mills Mann, VNA and all the loving and devoted compassionate caregivers at Abode for the love and care they extended through the final months and days of her life.

A vigil service with Rosary will be held at 6:30PM, August 23rd, 2023, followed on August 24th by a memorial mass and reception (with food and drink) starting at 10:30AM, all at St Mark's the Evangelist,1602 Thousand Oaks Dr, San Antonio, TX 78232.

For ten continuous years after UTHSCSA retirement she regularly donated whole blood to the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center.  She learned this humanitarian offering from her Dad, also a donor when called.

With a terminal GBM diagnosis her doctor's advice was to end the regular blood donation in order to stay physically strong.

In lieu of flowers it was Letitia's wish that, if possible, you donate blood on a regular basis along with signing up to be an organ/tissue.

Tisha said being able to live her final days of life at Abode was an end of life "miracle."

She hoped you'd learn more about the hospice care group and continue to support them in any way possible.
