Kurt G.
Shackelford
Oct 11, 1955 — Aug 28, 2024
San Antonio
Kurt G. Shackelford was born to Billy W. and Ursula (Edith) Shackelford in Kaiserslautern, Germany, on October 11, 1955. He passed away on August 28, 2024, in San Antonio, TX.
Kurt was a gentle soul whose greatest loves were fishing, reading, dogs, and art. He loved fishing from the time he was a toddler and never lost the joy of having a fish on the line. He spent days at the coast, eating sandwiches from a cooler, and only taking short breaks to maximize his fishing time. He loved sharing his hobby with his niece, and they would often search for secret fishing holes, keeping their favorite locations a well-guarded secret.
Kurt's deep connection to his German heritage was reflected in the thoughtful names he chose for each of his pets. He had an unwavering love for animals, never turning away a stray dog in need of a home. Kurt was a voracious reader, and in high school, he volunteered at the library (Highlands High School - Class of 1973). He read continually, loved to write poetry, and had an amazing memory for trivia.
After High School and technical training school, Kurt served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1974 to 1978 and was Honorably Discharged. He returned to San Antonio and worked at Lackland AFB and Kelly Field before taking early retirement. He was awarded many commendations by the Department of the Air Force for streamlining processes and reducing costs associated with his duties.
He was the best uncle to his niece, Sarah Nicole.
Kurt is preceded in death by his parents and is mourned by his sister, Karen Shackelford George and his beloved niece, Sarah George Klema.
