In Loving Memory of John Alfred Wirtz Jr.
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of John Alfred Wirtz Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend. John lived a life defined by honor, service, integrity, and an unwavering love for his family.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army for 32 years. During his distinguished military career, he served in the Vietnam War with the 75th Ranger Regiment (Charlie Rangers) and honorably retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer III. His courage, dedication, and leadership reflected the values he carried throughout his life.
Following his retirement from the Army, John continued serving his country as a government contractor for more than 20 years, bringing the same professionalism, work ethic, and commitment that had defined his military career.
John and his beloved wife, Changmi Wirtz, made their home in South Korea, where they shared many wonderful years together filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories.
Family was the center of John's world. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and especially his great-grandchildren. They affectionately nicknamed him "Bald Grandpa," a name he proudly embraced because it came from the little ones he loved so dearly. Whether he was playing games, telling stories, or simply enjoying their company, every moment spent with them was precious to him.
John also had a passion for scuba diving, traveling, and experiencing new places. He embraced life with curiosity, generosity, and a sense of adventure, leaving lasting memories with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Changmi Wirtz; his daughter, Crystal A. Farr, and her husband, Robert Farr; his daughter-in-law, Teresa Wirtz; his brothers, Monte Wirtz and Michael Wirtz; his cherished grandchildren, Justin Wirtz, Cera Farr, Charles Poston and his husband, Matt Poston, Marshall Wirtz and his wife, Sumerlyn, Meghan Farr, and Mallory Wirtz Fant and her husband, Jordan Fant; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Levi, Colton, Kynzleigh, AJ, Atlas, and Emberlyn. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
John was preceded in death by his father, John Alfred Wirtz Sr.; his mother, Eunice Wirtz; his beloved son, John Alfred Wirtz III; and his sister, Ida Krause.
John's legacy is one of faithful service, unconditional love, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his family. Whether serving his country, providing for those he loved, or making his great-grandchildren laugh, he gave his whole heart in everything he did. Although our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that his love, wisdom, and example will continue to guide us for generations to come.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 9:45 a.m. Family and friends are invited to attend as they celebrate John's remarkable life and honor his faithful service to both his country and his family.
John Alfred Wirtz Jr. will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his memory will be treasured for generations to come.
