Obituary

Jeraldine (Jerie) Louise Scheel, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at her home, with her husband of 59 years by her side. She was 79 years old.

Jerie was born, November 16, 1940, to parents, Arthur T. Mooty, Jr. and Lucille A. Moeller. She grew up on the Southeast side of San Antonio and attended Brackenridge High School, where she graduated in 1958. She is the middle sister to Jackie Scharf and Shirley Voigt.

In her youth, Jerie enjoyed attending the weekend dances at Polo Grill Dance Hall, where she would meet her husband, "Bill", in March 1960. They would marry the following year, November 24, 1961. They spent many years twirling around the dance floor. They had their first child, Phillip, in 1965 and she became a stay at home mother. She raised her son and loved doing all the things a boy's mom would do. Baseball, football, FFA, you'd always find her attending every game or rodeo event. In November 1975, they would have a daughter, Barbi. At that point, she got to do all the girl things. Dance classes, cheerleading and dance team kept her busy. She was always sewing a costume or getting Barbi ready for recitals or a Friday night football game. She never missed either of her kid's games or recitals. Through all the school events, between Phillip and Barbi, Jerie become "mom" to so many, who to this day, still consider her their adopted mother.

In 1992, her first grandson was born. She immediately became known to all as "Nana". She had the privilege of taking care of Tanner and 16 months later, in 1994, her second grandson, Dalton. They were her pride and joy. She always said being their Nana was the best gift she could ever have. She loved being able to have them every day where she would do crafts with them and teach them how to be amazing young men. Again, she kept the tradition of attending every tee-ball, pee-wee football, roller hockey, high school football, high school baseball and college football game that the boys would have, at home or on the road! Even with her "boys" grown into young men, she still loved watching all they would accomplish and is so proud of them. They will always be "Nana's boys".

Once her kids and grandkids were grown, Jerie was never bored and never slowed down. She was involved is several bowling clubs, numerous bunco groups and crafted on anything that stayed still long enough for her to paint or hot glue a bead to it! You can't walk through her home without seeing something she had to embellish or put her mark on. She was and will always be the life of the parties that she loved hosting. Every day was a holiday for her, and her house was always open anytime someone stopped by for a visit.

Jerie's final passion became her "Bed & Biscuit" dog kennel. She always had a love for animals, and she was able to give her love to her "kamperz". She enjoyed meeting many wonderful people who accepted her to care for their fur babies while they vacationed. She called it her "pennies from heaven". She was blessed to have so many animals in her life and made friendships that would last well beyond the care of their pups.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bill, son Phillip and his wife Karen, daughter Barbi and her husband Kris. Grandchildren, Tanner and Dalton (DJ). Sisters Jackie Scharf, Shirley Voigt (Harold) and several nieces and nephews. She had many lifelong friends and fur babies. We will all certainly miss her.

Our mom is a strong woman. While the end of her life was a challenge, she faced it head on with perseverance and determination in her own unique style. It was her desire that her body be given for the purpose of advancement of medical and research education to help end ALS. She will remain in our hearts forever and always.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ALS Association of Texas ( www.alstexas.org ). A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
