Frances Mae Duke Smith

January 17, 1926 – January 19, 2024

Frances Mae Duke Smith passed away peacefully, at age 98, on January 19, 2024. Known for her fierce independence and quiet but spirited personality, she is dearly missed by all who knew her.

Born near Weatherford, TX, Frances was the eighth of nine children born to William David Duke and Martha Alice Roark Duke. Before moving to Austin, she spent many years in Fort Worth raising her children, working in healthcare administration, and later earning many awards for her sales proficiency in the legendary Foleys department store. Frances was beautiful, elegant and entertaining.

She is survived by daughter Carolyn Smith of Austin, TX; son Doug Smith and wife Kay of Fort Worth, TX; grandson Charles Duke Daniels of Benbrook, TX and step-granddaughter Peyton Johnson of Washington, DC.

Her last wishes to will her body to research were honored. May she rest in peace.
