Diana Kathryn (Kay) Ford, age 70, born in San Antonio on 23 May 1940, died 4 April 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry James and Helen Mullen Ford, and her nephew, Max Ambrose Athens. Survivors include sisters Carol Ford Athens, Jan Ford and husband Randy Anderson, all of San Antonio; brother Henry J Ford Jr and wife Denise Ford of Charlotte, NC; nephew Anthony Athens III and wife Debra Maltz of San Antonio; niece Lucia Athens and husband Bill Corrigan Jr of Austin, TX; niece and namesake Diana Maxwell Ford of Charlotte, NC; great nephews Nicco Athens of Ithaca, NY and Benno Athens of Austin and San Antonio; and devoted friend and caregiver Rochelle Williams of San Antonio. Before starting high school, Kay joined the religious community of The Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament in Victoria, TX. After ten years in the community, including three years teaching elementary school, she set out on her own, continuing in service to others. She moved to northern Virginia in 1966 where she lived until taking early retirement in 1995. She spent almost 30 years as a highly respected executive secretary for the Pan American Health Organization, a division of the United Nations World Health Organization, in Washington, DC. Kay was the mischiefmaker in the family and known for her wicked sense of humor, her love of birding and all wild creatures, Tex-Mex cheese enchiladas and the Democratic Party. When asked her religious preference, she answered dryly "Druid." The family is grateful beyond measure to Rochelle Williams and also deeply appreciates the compassionate care of Melba Beine MD, and the staffs of Northeast Baptist Hospital, Parklane West Healthcare Center and Vitas Hospice Care. As Kay wished, her remains will be cremated and there will be no service. Friends and family will gather to honor and celebrate her life and share their happiest memories of her. Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Bexar County or The Nature Conservancy.
